Why Activated Charcoal (Carbon)?
Dr. Clark and other respected researchers have found that Activated Charcoal, or Carbon, is the very best product for eliminating polluted chlorine in your water supply. Activated Charcoal is charcoal that has been treated with oxygen to open up millions of tiny pores between the carbon atoms. The use of special manufacturing techniques results in highly porous charcoals that have surface areas of 300-2000 square meters per gram. Activated Charcoals are widely used to adsorb odorous or colored substances from gases or liquids. The huge surface area of Activated Charcoal gives it countless bonding sites. When certain chemicals pass next to the carbon surface, they attach to the surface and are trapped. Also, Activated Charcoal removes some substances by catalytic reaction known ad redox. Why Loose Carbon Media?
Solid carbon media is subject to �channeling.� Channeling refers to water passing through least resistant path of the carbon pores, thus reducing contact time with carbon. The result? Loose Carbon Media, on the other hand, can be periodically repositioned by means of a hot-water backwash. Please note that carbon medium is generally not effective in removing large amounts the following contaminants: Bacteria, arsenic, cadnium, iron, and radiactive materials. Some carbon filters can be configured to remove lead. Lead is generally NOT a problem with most public water supplies. It is old, lead pipes in the home that are the culprit. If you have a MUNICIPAL WATER supply, you will not need to worry about bacteria and viruses, as the chlorine will kill them.
If you have a WELL WATER supply, or if you desire even further purification, you definitely want to add a good ultraviolet (UV) light source. We like the one below, made by Watts. It's affordable and sturdy.

The Whole House Water Filter is Easy to Use
A Computerized Main Control Valve allows you to set the exact backwash time needed. Dr. Clark recommends a 10-minute backwash every 5 days for an average family. Water consumption per backwash is 64 gallons (10 minutes plus 6 minutes rinse cycle equals 16 minutes total x 4 Gallons Per Minute).
This filter is sold as a kit. Once correctly assembled by your plumber, the filter can be set to perform an automatic hot-water backwash every 5 days.
Carbon filler replacement for the filter is replaced every 3 years! You don't to replace every 6-12 months like many filters. This saves you time and money!

Pre-Installation Considerations
Before installing the filter, make sure you have a gas-powered water heater installed. Dr. Clark prefers gas-powered water heaters over electric water heaters.
Should you have old pipes and want clean uncontaminated water, Dr. Clark recommends 3 options:
Epoxy Coat your old pipes
Replace old pipes with PVC
Install �extra PVC plumbing� for kitchen and bathroom sinks and shower.
