In the life cycles of most digenetic trematodes, cercariae (singular = cercaria) escape from the first intermediate host and infect the second intermediate host forming a metacercaria.  Most cercariae are similar in appearance in that they have a "body" and a "tail" adapted for swimming.  However, the "tails" of cercariae from different species of trematodes vary considerably in appearance.  Three examples of cercariae with well developed tails are shown below.
